Shane Holmes (Berkley Vale, NSW) was today crowned champion at the Wild Surf Co Mattara, taking out the cadet boys division amongst an all-star cast. Up against Jordi Watson (Currarong, NSW), Oscar Scanes (Old Bar, NSW) and Wade Carmichael (Avoca, NSW) in the final, who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Holmes was over the moon with his victory.
“This is easily the biggest and best win of my career,” he said after taking home $250 cash and 1500 Hurley NSW Championship Circuit ratings points. Surfing with power and optimum wave selection throughout the entire event, Holmes was admittedly in awe of his competition - which featured junior prodigies and stars of the future.
“I was just stoked to make my first heat, let alone win the whole thing,” Holmes stated. “The standard of guys in the competition is amazing, I can’t really believe that I won.” A late entrant in the event, Holmes’ place came at his mother’s wishes and his surprise. “Mum didn’t even tell me she had entered me in the contest,” Holmes said with a smile.
“I’m stoked she did now.” In what was a thrilling final in small, offshore conditions Holmes’ title was nearly taken off him at the death, with Jordi Watson launching a last gasp attempt for the crown. Needing an excellent score with under a minute remaining, Watson turned and latched onto a set wave. Attacking it with all he had, Watson was awarded an 8.17 (out of a possible 10) – falling 0.10 points short of Holmes’ accumulated heat total.
“I saw Jordi on that last wave and was freaking out a bit,” Holmes said. “I was just lucky he didn’t get the score.” Next stop on the Hurley NSW Championship Circuit is the Zink Surf South Coast Open to be held at Werri Beach on the wave rich south coast of NSW.
